WHO

If you have an established mindfulness practice and wish to share mindfulness with others with integrity, MTTP is for you. We’re especially interested in serving those in a position to offer mindfulness classes or workshops in their own community, organization, or institution.

A qualified applicant will have:

  • Completed an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class. Other mindfulness courses cannot be substituted for this requirement.
  • Established a daily practice of mindfulness meditation and mindful movement.
  • Attended at least one silent, teacher-led meditation retreat of at least 5 days in length (some concurrency may be allowed)

Our MTTP is also a powerful foundational training for those interested in teaching mindfulness-based classes and interventions such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), or Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP). See also our Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher Training described below.

WHERE & WHEN

The program runs from September through May each year and is a mix of online and in-person learning. All are welcome. You must be able to travel to the Northwest Washington five times. Much of the learning and interaction also happens through flexible distance-learning in between our in-person meetings. See the Key Dates for the upcoming cohort below.

WITH

Program Director Tim Burnett combined his decades of teaching experience, years of creating and leading courses in mindfulness, and his knowledge of the Buddhist roots of mindfulness to design this program. His deep knowledge and warm, down-to-earth style provide a rich experiential education for trainees. With a background in education, Tim has been teaching mindfulness in diverse communities since he founded Mindfulness Northwest in 2011. He is fully certified in three of the major mindfulness-based interventions: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), Compassion Cultivation Training (CCT). Tim is also grounded in 35 years of Zen Meditation where he is a Soto Zen Priest and teacher. He received Dharma Transmission from his long-time mentor Zoketsu Norman Fischer in 2011 and was installed as Guiding Teacher of the Red Cedar Zen Community in Bellingham in 2017.

Tuition

Tuition is $6,900 for early bird applications submitted before May 1st and $7,400 thereafter. The tuition for the 9-month MTTP program including all retreats, seminars, and ongoing instruction and support.

Scholarships and Social Justice

Mindfulness Northwest’s mission is to bring the healing possibilities of mindfulness training to all people and we recognize that tuition can be a barrier. If this is true for you, we warmly invite you to apply for a scholarship. Please let us know if your intention is to serve underserved communities in your future work as a mindfulness teacher, and any ways you are already working with or have served these communities, as this will be weighed into the scholarship award decision. Please include a note in your application or write to us at office@mindfulnessnorthwest.com to inquire about a Diverse Communities Scholarship.

Applying for MTTP

A rolling application process opens on January 1st of each year. An early bird discounted tuition is available until May 1st. Applications close on August 15th. Prospective applicants are invited for an intake interview. Those selected to participate in our MTTP program begin classes in September of that year.

Ready to get started? Please fill out the application and we’ll get back to you soon to arrange your interview. A letter of recommendation is a part of the process.

I was fortunate enough to be able to participate in the MTTP program in 2020. MORE TESTIMONIALS

In the opening retreat of the MTTP program we collectively identified qualities of good teaching such as humility, humor, appropriate self-disclosure, flexibility, curiosity, and presence. Tim modeled these and invited them in me.  We worked in so many different contexts including: leading practice, didactic, and inquiry. There was a wonderful infusion throughout of “not knowing,” and I was moved by the very real, candid fluctuations of energy and emotional vulnerability in me, in Tim, and the other trainees.

That the structure of the program wasn’t only an academic workshop, that it included shared retreat together, was so imperative and so beneficial, particularly early on as a part of gelling the group and concluding with retreat again. I was grateful that we were given so much freedom, that this training was not curriculum based. Instead we were given practices and trusted to design and integrate them appropriate to our teaching context. Overall: Excellent! Wow!!!

– Amy C. Darling, LAc.

My first foray into becoming a Mindfulness Teacher started with a six-day Foundation Teacher Training course at another agency. After the course I felt I had just the basics, and was to follow through for certification with an online mentor. I couldn’t see a way forward that worked for me, and then I found Mindfulness Northwest and MTTP.

Together as a group we took a deep dive into the Foundations of Mindfulness, science and research, and fundamentals of being a teacher. We had periodic face-to-face conferences with Tim in-between classes. We practiced using teach-backs in a safe and supportive environment. The support system was so strong with the cohort — it will be a life-long bond. I came away with a deep sense of enrichment and confidence. I now have have started to teach this wonderful heartfelt practice back home in Idaho.

– Carol Reager, RN

The Mindfulness Northwest Teacher Training Program provides students with opportunity for inner growth, skill development, and community involvement. Tim Burnett artfully weaves the practice of mindfulness into an instructional program, invites students to reflect on their gifts, and guides them in developing class structure to encourage growth and discovery. Students have the opportunity to connect with mindfulness community leaders in a small class environment encouraging intimate conversation and presence. My experience with the MTTP program has been transformational. We had the exquisite environment to make life-long relationships in our cohort as we each emerged as new teachers. I highly recommend the MNW MTTP program for its flexibility in both individual and cohort development, venues offered for experiential learning, and deep learning of mindfulness.

– Laura Chun Daniel, MPM, PMP, CRM

As an MD, I am particularly interested in the intersection of health caregivers and mindfulness. Tim Burnett assembled a wonderful cohort of like-minded students for the MTTP program and created a curriculum that was incredibly educational and inspiring. If you have any inclination towards deepening your understanding of mindfulness and being able to teach others, I highly recommend this program.

MTTP: STEP BY STEP OUTLINE

STEP 1: PRE-REQUISITES

  • Participate: take a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class or similar intensive training in mindfulness as a participant.
  • Practice: establish a near-daily mindfulness practice including sitting meditation and body practices to continue through the teacher training process. If possible, do formal meditation regularly with a group and work with a meditation teacher.
  • Retreat: attend at least one silent, teacher-led meditation retreat of at least 5 days in length prior to beginning the MTTP program. Some exceptions (and concurrency) to this requirement may be granted at our discretion.
  • Apply: we begin accepting applications in January each year. We require a written application and a letter of recommendation from a mentor, teacher, or colleague helping us understand why this teacher training program is a good fit for you at this time. Once these are received, an interview is scheduled. It’s a selective process as we limit the cohort to 12 people. Upon approval for enrollment, the registration process will be completed with a $500 Enrollment Deposit. See the key dates and training locations schedule.

STEP 2: 9-MONTH SEMINAR IN THE FUNDAMENTALS OF TEACHING MINDFULNESS

  • Five in-person retreats, all held at a retreat center in Skagit Valley, Washington (food and lodging included in your MTTP registration)
    • Opening Retreat (September): a three-day workshop/retreat to explore our intentions and begin the journey together.
    • 7-day Roots of Mindfulness Retreat (October): a 7-day silent mindfulness retreat in which you join other participants to watch Tim and his co-teacher model how to lead a multi-day mindfulness retreat. Includes important content on the Buddhist and scientific roots of mindfulness.
    • Spring Weekend Retreat (late March): Join a public weekend mindfulness retreat and see how Tim and his co-teacher offer a retreat which is often the first overnight retreat of many participants.
    • Spring Seminar (mid-April): A weekend workshop to practice our mindfulness leading skills together in person.
    • Closing Retreat (late May / early June): a 3-day workshop/retreat in which the cohort makes presentations, celebrates, and graduates from the program.
  • Five home-based distance learning blocks
    • 4- to 6-week-long, distance-based Learning Blocks with daily practice assignments, readings, short videos to watch and reflection papers to write, supported by interaction with a supervising teacher.
    • Weekly assignments for practice and study.
  • Three live online training weekends:
    • Weekends in which we’ll gather for live instruction and interaction over Zoom to explore the contents of MTTP. Held via Zoom in mid-November, mid-January, and mid-February.
    • We’ll explore essential topics in teaching mindfulness and practice teaching with peers. We’ll also review papers, videos, and books explored during the preceding Learning Block.
  • Practicum Project (Spring)
    • on your own or with a co-teacher from the MTTP cohort, design and deliver a one-day introductory workshop on mindfulness in your community with plenty of support from TIm and the cohort.
    • The learning is deepened with a video based debrief with Tim and another cohort member after you deliver your practicum workshop.

STEP 3: CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION

Upon satisfactory completion of at least 85% of the meetings and assignments (including the Practicum Project) you will receive a Certificate of Completion for the Mindfulness Northwest Mindfulness Teacher Training Program. The Certificate of Completion demonstrates your attendance and full participation in the program. You are then invited to call yourself a Trained Mindfulness Teacher.
(Certification is an additional, optional, step – please see below.)

STEP 4: TEACHER CERTIFICATION (PORTFOLIO REVIEW) – OPTIONAL

After successful completion of the 9-month Program, and by invitation from Mindfulness Northwest, trainees are invited to submit a portfolio for evaluation of Certification. The Certification offered by this program is to become a Certified Mindfulness Teacher. (Additional training is needed for certification in specific curricula such as MBSR – see below.) The cost of this certification is $500 (payment plans available).

  • Portfolio: any time within 12 months of completion of the MTTP program you may submit a portfolio demonstrating your teaching competence, including:
    • Recordings: your own practice guidance recordings of the principal mindfulness practices
    • Materials: written materials (manual, hand outs) you created to support a mindfulness class or workshop
    • Video: of yourself teaching coursework after MTTP completes
  • Review and Discuss: the Portfolio Review process includes a video meeting with the instructor to guide, refine, and explore your understanding of teaching.
  • Certification: Trainees will be evaluated for certification according to mindfulness industry standards (the Mindfulness-Based Interventions Teaching Assessment Criteria: MBI-TAC). In some cases additional training, adjustment, and re-submission of some parts of the portfolio may be requested before certification is granted. We will make every effort through the Seminar and the Supervision process to prepare trainees for successful Teacher Certification.

MTTP Participant Agreement

In joining the Mindfulness Northwest’s Mindfulness Teacher Training Program (MTTP) I understand and agree to the following:

Program Basics

Program Completion: To receive the Certificate of Completion participants must attend 85% of MTTP events and complete 85% of MTTP assignments according to the point grading system.

Time Limit for Completion:

(1) MTTP Assignments: The participant agrees that the time allowed to complete the MTTP late assignments shall be six months from the Closing Retreat. If unfinished assignments are not completed by this time a Certificate of Completion of the MTTP cannot be issued.

(2) Teacher Certification: The participant agrees that the mindfulness class or workshop to be taught under supervision shall be completed (last day taught) within one year of completion of the Seminar’s Closing Retreat. If supervised teaching is not completed by this time, certification as a Certified Mindfulness Teacher cannot be granted.

Advancement to Certification: Advancement from completion of the MTTP program into Supervised Teaching leading towards Teacher Certification is not guaranteed – MTTP faculty will make the determination that each participant is ready to advance to supervision and certification.

No guarantee of Certification: The participant acknowledges that participation in the supervision and certification process and payment of the required tuition fees do not guarantee that the participant will become a Certified Mindfulness Teacher through the Mindfulness Northwest MTTP. The participant acknowledges that the MTTP training program requires that the participant demonstrates “basic understanding of the fundamental principles of mindfulness and the teachings that underlie mindfulness and demonstrates competency in delivering mindfulness training to various groups and individuals.” This determination of competency in mindfulness teacher will be based on, but not limited to, the criteria specified in the MBI-TAC (Mindfulness-Based Interventions Teacher Assessment Criteria).

Residential Retreats

Simple accommodations. Accommodations at the residential retreats are simple and may involve sharing a room. Room and board costs at the retreat center retreats are included in your MTTP Tuition, with the exception of E-Cabins at Samish Island Campground (which include en-suite bathrooms) where you will be responsible to pay a surcharge.

Tuition Payments

Upon admission to the Mindfulness Teacher Training Program, a tuition deposit is due within 30 days. This saves your place in the program and covers preliminary administrative costs.

The balance of the tuition can be paid in 1 of 2 ways:

  1. Pay in full by credit card
  2. Pay with a 10-month, interest-free payment plan

Monthly payment plans are set up through the Partial.ly service, a 3rd party online payment plan service.

The tuition balance must be paid or payment plan opened by August 31st of the training year.

Early Withdrawal from the Program

In the event that an MTTP student withdraws from the program, a tuition reduction (or refund) will be determined based on the percentage of months the student has participated in the 9 month training period. More details below.

Deposit is Non-Refundable – Mindfulness Northwest will retain the $500 tuition deposit if an enrolled student withdraws from the program prior to the Opening Retreat.

Student withdrawal after training has begun – Mindfulness Northwest retains a percentage of the full tuition based on withdrawal date (time spent in the training program), as indicated in Table 1 below.

Funds paid in excess of the amount due to Mindfulness Northwest will be refunded. Students paying with payment plans will continue making payments until the amount due has been paid.

Any refund will be paid within 30 calendar days of the student’s official withdrawal date.

Determining withdrawal date – A student’s official withdrawal date is determined by one of the following (at the discretion of Mindfulness Northwest):

  1. Date the Program Director receives notice of the student’s intention to discontinue the training program
  2. Date student is given notice of termination for a violation of a published program policy which provides for termination
  3. Date after which a student fails to attend training meetings or classes for 14 calendar days without notifying program staff
If the student withdraws at any point during this training month Mindfulness Northwest will retain this percentage of the full tuition:
September* 20%
October 30%
November 40%
December 50%
January 60%
February 70%
March 80%
April 90%
May 100%

* in September this applies to withdrawal after the Opening Retreat begins:

Example

In the case of a tuition rate of $6220, and a withdrawal in October, Mindfulness Northwest would retain (or be owed) 30% of $6220 = $1866.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher Training

Our Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher Training (MBSR-TT) is an immersive, two-year, apprentice-style training in how to teach the 8-week MBSR class with skill and confidence. It features hands-on, in-classroom training with a high faculty-to-student ratio. Personalized feedback and warm support are the hallmarks of this unique certification program. The program is now available with online practicum placement and online cohort meetings to people beyond the Pacific Northwest!

Learn to teach MBSR in a real classroom setting in person or online

The first year consists of practicum-based training in a small cohort. Trainees learn how to teach, and study teaching, from within the context of actual MBSR classes guided by our Senior Teachers. In later stages MBSR-TT becomes a mentorship-based self-paced program which can be completed in a second year or at your own pace over a longer period.

Online practicums make this training accessible worldwide. You may complete our MBSR-TT completely online. In-person practicums are rich and are available to students in the Puget Sound, WA and Atlanta, GA regions.

To fulfill the prerequisites for application to MBSR-TT, you have:

  • Taken the MBSR course at least once.
  • Completed at least one silent, teacher-led meditation retreat of 5 days or longer.
  • Established a consistent personal meditation practice.

Feel free to contact us before applying if you are unsure whether you meet the above prerequisites.

Weekly cohort meetings enable us to learn across several MBSR classrooms.

Mindfulness Northwest’s MBSR training provides an in-depth study of the course material, with ample time to discuss and dive into the material with senior teachers both in-person and in online group meetings. There are many opportunities to develop teaching skills with assistance from the senior teachers. The atmosphere is supportive, while also delivering important feedback.

MORE TESTIMONIALS

The MBSR-TT program was exactly what I needed, desired and exceeded my expectations. The first phase was particularly exhilarating, learning in a group setting and shadowing a full round of the MBSR course. The weekly zoom calls with our cohort and two senior teachers was such rich ground for engagement and learning.

The quality of the staff was and is the cornerstone of any good program and Karen, Tim, and Richard at Mindfulness Northwest are phenomenal humans, teachers, and guides. I feel as though I have not just gone through a certification program but I have been welcomed into a family where I got to nurture myself and my skills. I cannot recommend this program enough!

– Kari Lyons

I live on the opposite side of the country from the MNW offices. The senior teachers for the MBSR-TT program at MNW helped connect me to a local certified MBSR teacher in Atlanta, GA who agreed to be my onsite mentor. This satellite arrangement worked out perfectly, and I felt like I got the full experience even though I was 3,000 miles away!

– Erika Bloodworth, Atlanta Georgia

The quality of training and support provided in the MBSR-TT program was transformative for me as a mindfulness teacher, helping me to gain confidence and competence.

Tim is passionate about the healing power of bringing a mindful compassionate attention to our lives and learning to accept ourselves more fully just the way we are.

STRUCTURE OF THE TRAINING

MBSR-TT unfolds over four phases. You work through the first two phases in a small cohort, with a low student:teacher ratio, in an intensive, practicum-based setting. The last two phases are more flexible and mentorship-based. Our Senior Teachers support you throughout the journey.

During Phase I, Fall & Winter of Year One, you will

  • be embedded in two MBSR classes organized by Mindfulness Northwest and taught by our Senior Teachers.
  • observing your Senior Teacher and participating right along with the students.
  • have progressively more teaching responsibility. Other cohort members may also be in your class.
  • collect short video recordings of the Senior Teacher and your own teaching to review.
  • process your experience in a weekly debrief after every MBSR class.
  • learn together in weekly Zoom meetings with the entire cohort.

During Phase II, Spring of Year One, you will

  • teach your first MBSR class: on your own, with a co-teacher, or with a Senior Teacher
  • with one of our Senior Teachers may be offered at our discretion.
  • continue collecting video of your teaching for review.
  • continue Weekly Zoom meetings with the entire cohort for support and training.
  • write reflections on each class session taught and receive personalized feedback from a Senior Teacher.

During Phase III: Year Two you will:

  • organize and teach three (3) MBSR classes on your own, or with a co-teacher.
  • receive nine hours of one–on-one mentorship support as you fully take the teacher’s seat.
  • have access to all of Mindfulness Northwest’s teaching materials

Phase III is flexible:

  • You can organize your MBSR classes in any community you have access to.
  • It’s fine if it takes longer than a year to teach 3 classes.

When you’re ready for Phase IV: Certification you will:

  • submit a teaching portfolio (including video of teaching and audio recordings) demonstrating that you’re ready to teach MBSR independently.
  • receive a portfolio review with a Senior Teacher.
  • keep learning: additional training and support may be recommended.

MORE DETAILS ABOUT MBSR-TT

PHASE I (WINTER AND SPRING OF YEAR 1)

In Phase I you are immersed in the MBSR classroom as an embedded practicum student in two consecutive courses. We place one to three MBSR-TT trainees in our MBSR courses mixed in with regular course participants. This participant-observer process begins with you observing (with the eyes of an emerging teacher) the Senior Teacher leading the class and gradually evolves into increasing amounts of teaching responsibility in the second MBSR course.

MBSR classes with the MBSR-TT practicum option are offered quarterly nline (using the Zoom video platform), in Bellingham, in the Seattle area, and in Atlanta, Georgia.

Phase I learning supports:

1) MBSR Attendance: Attend two high quality MBSR classes you are embedded in as a trainee.
2) Progressive Teaching Responsibility: Move gradually from being an observer to a teacher over the course of the two MBSR practicum courses.
3) Video Recording of Teaching: You and the other trainees embedded in your class will collect short video recordings of trainees and Senior Teachers teaching in each MBSR class.
4) Weekly In-Person Debrief Meetings: Following each MBSR class you will meet with your assigned Senior Teacher for a 30-minute debrief to discuss questions and observations while they are fresh.
5) Weekly Cohort Meeting Online: join in weekly video meetings with the entire cohort and our Senior Teachers for 90 minutes when classes are in session.

PHASE II (SPRING OF YEAR 1)

The flexible nature of our small and responsive training program comes to the fore in Phase II. Depending on your state of readiness you will next be invited to do one of the following: (1) teach your own MBSR class, (2) co-teach an MBSR class with another trainee, or (3) co-teach an MBSR class with a Senior Teacher. The trainee is responsible for organizing this third MBSR class in the series and we will offer support. In the case of co-teaching with a Mindfulness Northwest Senior Teacher, the course is always organized by Mindfulness Northwest.

Phase II learning supports:

1) Teaching Responsibility: You are now actively teaching MBSR while still in a setting of very high support and guidance.

2) Video Recording of Teaching: You, and the other trainee if applicable, will continue to collect short video recordings of your teaching.

3) Written Reflections: We have developed a productive format for learning and development as a teacher through written reflections. Trainees share these reflections with each other, facilitating continuing cross-fertilization and with the Senior Teachers, one of whom will respond each week.

4) Weekly Cohort Meeting Online: we continue our weekly 90 minute video meetings with the entire cohort and our Senior Teachers during Phase II

PHASE III (YEAR 2 / FLEXIBLE)

In your Phase III teaching you will be organizing and teaching your own MBSR classes with support from a mentor. You will organize and teach three (3) MBSR courses either on your own or co-teaching with another trainee or MBSR teacher in your community. Note that the business arrangements of these course are up to you: you may charge participants or do these courses as part of a work project, etc.

During your Phase III teaching while you arrange the venue and do the outreach needed to form a class, you are also welcome to use Mindfulness Northwest MBSR class materials (manuals and recordings) which you will be familiar with from your 3 MBSR courses in Phases I and II.

Mutual support between peers in the training cohort is also encouraged. Program-organized weekly video meetings are during Phases I and II only but we encourage cohort members to keep in close contact and you might choose to continue having regular video meetings with your peers.

Phase III Learning Supports:

  • Assigned Mentor – During each of your three MBSR courses you will be assigned a Senior Teacher to be your mentor and support.
  • Written Reflections – While teaching your first course, after you teach each MBSR weekly class session you will write a written reflection on how the class went. We’ve developed a self-reflection format that we feel helps to both strengthen your confidence and pinpoint areas of growth and learning. Your reflections will be read carefully by your mentor who will respond each week.
  • Peer Support – You’ll be able to stay connected with other cohort members as you go forward. All of our teacher trainings emphasize serving our Pacific Northwest region which makes it more possible for lasting collegial relationships to build.
  • Mentorship Meetings –  Have up to nine 1-hour video meetings with a Senior Teacher mentor over the process of teaching the three MBSR courses. The scheduling of these is up to you and additional mentorship meetings can be requested (additional charge).

PHASE IV: CERTIFICATION AS A TEACHER OF MBSR

Upon completion of Phases I, II, and III you have now been a part of six MBSR courses with increasing levels of responsibility.  You are next invited to submit a portfolio for certification.

This portfolio includes video samples of the most recent MBSR course you taught highlighting your ability to teach in the three main modes of MBSR instruction (didactic, leading practice, and inquiry) plus a set of home practice recordings to be used by your future students.

Upon submission of your portfolio it will be reviewed by one of the Senior Teachers and you will be invited to a portfolio review meeting. In this meeting we will highlight strengths and areas of improvement needed and share the determination around whether you are now certified. If additional learning is required, we will do our best to support you through this process. Our teacher evaluation utilizes the emerging industry standard assessment for evaluating mindfulness teachers: the Mindfulness-Based Intervention Teacher Assessment Criteria (MBI-TAC).

We reserve the right to ask you to teach additional MBSR class(es) or re-do portfolio materials if our standards of excellence are not yet met. We are committed to working with students to complete this process. Certification as a teacher of MBSR is not a guaranteed outcome of the program but having worked closely with you from the beginning we don’t expect any surprises at this final stage.

MBSR-TT Participant Agreement

In applying to join Mindfulness Northwest’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher Training Program (MBSR-TT) I understand and agree that:

PROGRAM BASICS

Program Completion. To receive a Certificate of Completion of the training, participants must attend at least 85% of the program. This includes attendance at three MBSR courses as a practicum student, attendance at weekly video conferencing calls during year 1, and teaching your three MBSR courses which you organize.

Advancement to Certification. Advancement from completion of the MBSR-TT program (Phase III) into Teacher Certification review (Phase IV) is not guaranteed – MBSR-TT faculty will make the determination that each participant is ready to advance to supervision and certification.

No guarantee of Certification. The participant acknowledges that participation in the supervision and certification process and payment of the required tuition fees do not guarantee that the participant will become a Certified Mindfulness Teacher through the Mindfulness Northwest MBSR-TT. The participant acknowledges that the MBSR-TT training program requires that the participant demonstrates “basic understanding of the fundamental principles of mindfulness and the teachings that underlie mindfulness and demonstrates competency in delivering the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course with high fidelity to the MBSR Curriculum.” This determination of competency in mindfulness teacher will be based on, but not limited to, the criteria specified in the MBI-TAC (Mindfulness-Based Interventions Teacher Assessment Criteria).

No implied offer of employment. Completing MBSR-TT does not imply a promise from Mindfulness Northwest that we will provide you with employment as a mindfulness teacher.

Time Limit for Completion of Assignments.

(1) Year Two MBSR Courses: It is strongly preferred that all participants complete teaching their 3 self-organized MBSR classes during the scheduled second year of the program. If this is not possible an extension must be request. Initial extension of 6 months is routinely granted. Additional extensions cannot be guaranteed.

(2) Teacher Certification: Application for certification with a complete MBSR Teaching Portfolio must be submitted within 6 months of teaching the 3rd self-organized MBSR class (MBSR class #6 as described in the program prospectus).

MBSR TEACHER TRAINING (MBSR-TT) TUITION POLICY

Tuition Deposit – Upon admission to the MBSR Teacher Training Program (MBSR-TT), a tuition deposit is due within 30 days of acceptance or on the first day of the first month in which the training begins (whichever comes first). This saves your place in the program and covers preliminary administrative costs.

Monthly Payments – A no-interest payment plan of 15 months begins during the first month of the MBSR-TT training. Each month’s payment being 1/15 of your total tuition.

Late Tuition Payments. Unless explicitly arranged, payments are due on the schedule described above. Late payments will be subject to a late fee of 5% annual interest compounded monthly.

EARLY WITHDRAWAL AND REFUNDS

In the event that an MBSR-TT student withdraws from the program, tuition refunds will be determined based on time spent in the program. More details below.

Deposit is Non-Refundable – Mindfulness Northwest will retain the $500 tuition deposit if an enrolled student withdraws from the program at any time, including prior to the first training meeting of Phase 1.

Student withdrawal after the training has begun – Mindfulness Northwest retains a percentage of the full tuition based on withdrawal date (time spent in the training program), as indicated in Table 1 below.

  1. Date the Program Director receives notice of the student’s intention to discontinue the training program.
  2. Date student is given notice of termination for a violation of a published program policy which provides for termination.
  3. Date after which a student fails to attend training meetings or classes for 14 calendar days without notifying program staff.
If the student withdraws at any point during this phase of training: Mindfulness Northwest may retain this percentage of the full tuition:
Up to 29 weeks after the training start date* or the last training date of Phase 1, whichever occurs first 40%
Up to 39 weeks after the training start date* or the last training date of Phase 2, whichever occurs first 60%
Up to 66 weeks after the start date* or the last training date of Phase 3, whichever occurs first 80%
After 66 weeks (about 70% of the training period) or the last training date of Phase 3, whichever occurs first 100%

* The start date is defined as the first MBSR-TT training meeting in person or online for this cohort.

Example

In the case of a tuition rate of $9100, and a withdrawal at the end of Phase II, Mindfulness Northwest would retain (or be owed) 60% of $9100 = $5460.

Policies & Program Info

Our COVID Policy

UPDATED October 4, 2022

Our COVID-19 policy is designed to balance our commitment to accessibility of mindfulness training with the safety of our participants and the communities they return to after attending a Mindfulness Northwest in-person event.

Stay home if you are ill: If you are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19, you should not attend. Should COVID-like symptoms begin during an event, notify a training leader immediately.

Full social distancing isn’t always practical in the venues we use. We will spread out as reasonable. Look to your instructor for guidance.

Mask wearing: currently RECOMMENDED. Always mask if you have had any recent exposure to Covid, are immunocompromised, or are in close contact with immunocompromised others. If you do choose to mask, make it count: N95 or KN95 masks have been shown to reduce viral spread much more effectively than cloth or surgical masks.

Masking requirement is subject to change: Masking requirements are based on CDC guidelines (current levels) and State and Country recommendations. CDC guidelines are responsive to current Community Covid Levels (High, Medium, or Low). Mask wearing is required when the Community Covid Level for that county becomes High. Currently (October 4, 2022) CDC levels are Low for the counties we work in and indoor masking is optional per CDC.

Masking by your teacher: At either optional or recommended masking level we do allow our teachers to be unmasked when speaking so that you can hear them better. When masking is required it is required for everyone, including the teacher.

Testing requirement for overnight programs: For our overnight retreats and trainings, a negative home COVID-19 test result is required. Please self-administer this test before arriving at the venue. If you forget to test we will have tests available at check in. Please go straight to the registration to complete your test with minimal contact with others if you did not test before arrival. This requirement is in recognition of the much larger amount of interaction participants have during overnight events.

Our Non-Discrimination Policy

We are honored to support each participant in their mindfulness practice. Mindfulness Northwest does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all of our staff, students, and clients.

You are welcome here

YOU ARE WELCOME HERE

Do you offer discounts or scholarships?

We do! Our mission is to make mindfulness accessible. To that end we offer a sliding scale for tuition which includes scholarship rates. No need to apply; simply choose the level that's the best fit for your budget. MNW alumni receive a discounted rate for some events. We also provide a 4-month interest-free payment plan option, available during registration.

Payment Plans & Sliding Scale Pricing

Payment Plans

You may pay your tuition with 4 monthly interest-free payments at Checkout. You will be redirected to Partial.ly, a 3rd party online payment plan service. Your first payment is made now, the remaining 3 are withdrawn on the same day of the month that you registered. Questions? Contact Partial.ly Support.

Sliding Scale Pricing

As part of our non-profit commitment to accessibility, we offer a sliding scale fee for most of our courses, workshops, retreats, and trainings. You may choose the fee that matches your budget; there is no application or screening process.

Our intention is to make our offerings affordable to all while allowing those who are more fortunate in their financial circumstances an opportunity to practice generosity. Generally, the middle "Our Cost" value on the sliding scale is the amount needed to fully cover the costs of your attending an offering.

There are 3 levels on our sliding scale fees in addition to scholarship options.

  • Supporting Tuition: At this level, your registration fees somewhat exceed the costs of your attending the program. This is an offering to help subsidize the reduced fees paid by others who have more challenging financial circumstances.
  • Our Cost Tuition: At this level, your registration fees fully cover the costs of your attending the program.
  • Subsidized Tuition: At this level, your registration fees do not fully cover the costs of your attending the program. If you select this level, your registration will be subsidized by others, either via the general donations people offer or through the additional fees paid by those selecting a Supporting Level fee.

Donations

Donations are another way to support the accessibility provided by our sliding scale. Will you help?

Mindfulness Northwest is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
