ABOUT LABELING

The meditation called Labeling (also known as Noting) is a very helpful practice for getting to know patterns in our minds while at the same time starting to develop some space around them. This practice helps us see what our minds are up to without being quite as caught by our minds. A process that psychologistics call “de-centering” or “dis-identifying” which is also pointed to by the bumper sticker wisdom: “Don’t believe everything you think!”

We offer here two recordings about 20 minutes long. In the first Tim gives extensive instructions on how to do Labeling practice. And in the second recording he gives much briefer comments and leaves a lot more room for you to do the practice in your own way (with a brief explanation and occasional reminders to help you keep on track).

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

  • Here are written instructions on Labeling from the meditation teacher Steven Levine.
  • Read about how Tim has found Labeling practice to be transformational in Planting Seeds from our March 2024 newsletter.
