Course Overview

Self-Compassion Training for Healthcare Communities (SCHC) is a 6-hour, evidence-based adaptation of the Mindful Self-Compassion program developed by Dr. Kristin Neff at the University of Texas at Austin and Dr. Chris Germer at Harvard Medical School. This training helps healthcare professionals enhance emotional balance and resilience through mindfulness and self-compassion practices.

Participants learn short, practical exercises that can be integrated directly into clinical work and daily life to prevent burnout and sustain compassion in challenging moments.

Why Self-Compassion?

Mindful self-compassion supports healthcare professionals in developing the inner resources needed to meet suffering, both their patients’ and their own, with balance, strength, and understanding. By cultivating self-compassion, clinicians can sustain their capacity to care for others while maintaining their own well-being.

Who It’s For

This course is designed for healthcare professionals who provide direct clinical care, including physicians, nurses, therapists, and allied health providers who wish to build resilience, prevent burnout, and sustain compassion in their work.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the key components of self-compassion and mindfulness and how they can be integrated into their role as healthcare professionals
  • Explain the difference between empathy and compassion and utilize strategies to avoid emotional exhaustion
  • Practice techniques to increase self-compassion at work and in everyday life
  • Apply one skill from each session to care for themselves emotionally while caring for others

Benefits of this Course

As opposed to other self-care techniques, self-compassion practices can be used on the spot while at work with patients and colleagues. As a participant of the program, you can learn tools to use throughout the day to:

  • Care for yourself while caring for others
  • Listen with compassion
  • Handle difficult emotions with greater ease
  • Reconnect to the values that give your life and work meaning
