Eligibility for our Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Teacher Training (MBSR-TT) Program
Please note that MBSR-TT is is an "advanced training" in that it's designed for those who have already done significant training in meditation, yoga, or related contemplative disciplines. For those newer to this work we recommend first taking our Mindfulness Teacher Training Program (MTTP) or other trainings in the study, delivery, and teaching of contemplative practice (e.g. yoga teacher training, introductory mindfulness teacher training with other institutes, etc.).
Clarity in Understanding What MBSR is:
It's essential to understand that Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a specific 8-week mindfulness course, created originally by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the 1970's and further refined by many teachers at the Center for Mindfulness at U Mass, and by other institutions such as the Center for Mindfulness at UCSD and Mindfulness Northwest. MBSR is not a general term for teaching mindfulness or for other mindfulness classes. If you are not yet familiar with MBSR, please see our MBSR page for more on this powerful mindfulness training class.
Prerequisites for application to MBSR-TT include:
Note that if you have not yet trained as a teacher or facilitator in the contemplative fields then MBSR-TT is not yet for you. Feel free to contact us before applying if you are unsure whether you meet the above prerequisites.
Looking for Fundamental Training in Teaching Mindfulness?
See our Mindfulness Teacher Training Program (MTTP) which is designed to give you a foundational understanding of mindfulness training and how to implement it in a variety of settings. It is both a pathway towards MBSR-TT and a complete training in its own right if you wish to offer mindfulness training in formats other than MBSR.
Tuition Costs & Payment
The total cost for the complete two-year training program is $9,100 (discounted to $7,700 for MTTP Alumni) and includes all administrative costs, training, portfolio review, and certification. There are no additional fees from Mindfulness Northwest for completing this training and becoming certified to teach MBSR.
Tuition Payment Process:
$500 of that total is due within 30 days of admission. This is a service fee and deposit to cover administrative costs prior to Phase I.
You will pay the remaining balance in one of 3 ways:
Payment arrangements must be completed by Sept 1 of the Phase 1 year.Scholarships and Social Justice
Mindfulness Northwest's mission is to bring the healing possibilities of mindfulness training to all people and we recognize that tuition can be a barrier. If this is true for you we warmly invite you to apply for a scholarship. Please let us know if your intention is to serve underserved communities in your future work as an MBSR teacher, and any ways you are already working with or have served these communities, as that will be weighed into the scholarship award decision.
Application Process and Deadlines
Please fill out the application form including your non-refundable $50 deposit to begin the process. Applications for the 2021-2022 cohort are now open. The program will start in the third week of January, 2021.
