I feel very grateful for this class. It provided the space and time to intentionally slow down, tune inward, and pay attention to my body, heart and mind. Connecting with other healthcare professionals who are also on the path of introspection and self-care felt very supportive. The work we do caring for others is deeply meaningful but can require a lot of energy. The class provided a safe container to rejuvenate, ground myself and show up in my life in a healthier, wiser way.
Meet Your Instructor
“I want to add my endorsement for the MHP class – this experience changed my life both professionally and personally. It gave me perspective which I had lost over time and due to chronic fatigue. This class can allow one to build emotional resilience in ways that nothing else does.”
Kevin Walsh, M.D.,
Ellensberg WA
Are you a stressed healthcare provider, administrator, or staff person? Has your work lost some of the meaning that kept you going? Interested in new tools and an emotional reboot?
Join a group of peers for an immersion in mindfulness and self-compassion training designed to support you in increasing resilience, self-kindness under stress, and renewing your connection to meaning during a peaceful weekend away at beautiful Semiahmoo County Park.
Our new Mindfulness Training Retreat is inspired by our successful 5-week Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals course which has been offering healthcare workers intensive training in mindfulness training for over a decade.
Who’s This For?
This weekend training retreat is designed to benefit all kinds of healthcare professionals, including nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers, and administrative staff, among others. If you think this course could be helpful for you, we encourage you to register. Spouses and partners are also welcome to join.
We’re excited to offer this weekend training retreat taught by two experienced teacher-physicians. It’s a great option for those in the medical profession new to mindfulness and also a great opportunity for those who have taken our 5-week class to deepen their practice of mindfulness in a retreat-style learning environment. We hope you can join us!
I did not realize how burned out I was. I was not enjoying my job, not even the time spent with patients, which had always been the fun part. Within 2 weeks of starting the MHP class, I started enjoying patient care again.
What to Expect
This highly participatory, practical training retreat includes:
- Periods of silent teacher-led mindfulness and compassion practices to truly “drop in”
- Periods of interactive workshop-style learning with peer group discussion
- Learning what mindfulness really means, how to train in it, and the benefits this can bring
- Exploring how the key components of self-compassion can help you meet feelings of failure and inadequacy with self-kindness
- Developing strategies for positive, mindful engagement in work and home situations which trigger stress response and unhelpful behaviors
- Building a mindfulness tool-kit for meeting moments of stress and strong emotion with clarity and wisdom

Benefits of Mindfulness & Self-Compassion
Our programs for healthcare professionals include core elements of the well-studied Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) curriculum (Kabat-Zinn 1990, 1982, 2002) and Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) programs (Germer & Neff, 2006) in a briefer and more concentrated format adapted for healthcare, and is equivalent in scale and content to several mindfulness training interventions which have proven effective (Fourtney et al. 2013, Schoroeder et al. 2015).
Preliminary data we’ve collected suggests our courses result in a decrease of symptoms of burnout, an increase in mindfulness, and a decrease in perceived stress. Specifically, the data show:
- an increase in mindfulness of 11%
- a decrease in perceived stress of 21%
- a reduction in depersonalization of 15%
- a decrease in emotional exhaustion 6%
- an increased sense of efficacy 8%
Our Mindfulness for Healthcare Professionals has been offered since 2012 at the University of Washington Medical School, The Everett Clinic, Evergreen Medical Center, Skagit Valley Regional Medical Center, PeaceHealth St. Joseph’s Medical Center, and Providence and through the WPHP and SCCA.
MBSR is the best researched mindfulness intervention with positive research indications for:
- Reduced stress and anxiety while working
- Reduced burnout
- Improved communication and relationships with patients
- Better patient outcomes
- Improved communications and relationships with co-workers
- Improved focus and creativity
- Greater job satisfaction
MSC is an excellent compliment to MBSR for
- Guided instruction in mindful self-compassion practices and meditations
- Skill building exercises for managing difficult emotions and developing compassion
- Learning how to motivate yourself with encouragement rather than criticism
- Learning how to stop being so hard on yourself and open to more happiness and joy
Beth Glosten, M.D.
(she/her) Teacher
beth@mindfulnessnorthwest.com | 360-830-6439 x702
Beth attended the University of Washington School of Medicine and had an academic anesthesiology career until physical issues prompted her to step back from that hectic life. She studied pilates, and through this system embraced moving mindfully. She was drawn to meditation several years ago and found it meshed naturally with her approach to teaching movement: turn focus inward to listen to, and befriend, one’s self. From this place, growth and healing are possible. This journey led her to Mindfulness Northwest where she completed both of our teacher training programs and became certified as a teacher of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Beth particularly appreciates being able to serve fellow healthcare providers in our Mindfuless for Healthcare program.
Danny Berg, M.D.
(he/Him) Visiting Teacher
Danny is a practicing physician who began studying and practicing mindfulness about 10 years ago. Having attended several retreats, he enrolled in and completed Mindfulness Northwest's Mindfulness Teacher Training Program with Tim Burnett and subsequently completed two further years of teacher training in the Mindful Meditation Teacher certification program led by Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield. He has co-taught an "Introduction to Mindfulness" course to fellow clinicians in Seattle. Having found the Mindful Self-Compassion program to be personally transformative, he recently completed teacher training in that program. He enjoys the opportunity to work with others sharing the journey into mindfulness and self-compassion.
